Hey Ryders, and welcome again to all the new faces. This week has been garbage! (Taxes) but I’m happy to say that I am right on schedule for releasing The New Normal! My mailing list followers got this update as an email on Wednesday, so if you’re looking for the latest up-to-date announcements and celebrations from me, be sure to join here!

This week’s updates include a cover reveal, an opportunity to become a beta reader, a link to a bunch of free gay books, and some words of encouragement for you all, so be sure to read all the way to the end.

Cover reveal for The New Normal (Inheritance #2), plus you can still sign up to beta read!

The sequel to Discovery and the second book in the Inheritance series is scheduled to come out May 3rd. It’s called The New Normal, and it takes place a couple weeks after the end of Discovery.

The New Normal is still accepting beta readers too, so if you want a free early access copy just hit reply! I will send you a google document just for you where you can read and leave your comments. I’d need your comments by April 30th to give me time to implement them into the story. And once the book is out, I can send you an e-book copy as well!

It’s about 15K words, so shouldn’t take too long to read through, so if you’re interested in giving it a read and leaving your feedback on what needs to be improved, I’d love to have you on the beta reader and/or ARC team! Simply drop me an email at ryder@ryderocox.com

Here’s the summary:

I do want to share something with you this week though – don’t compare yourself to anyone else. This is the same picture of me side by side. The one on the left is the original, taken after my crown fell out. I have no front tooth right now haha. Part of my bad week, but I digress.

On the right picture, I used a free photo editing app on my phone. The app fixed my tooth, fixed the dark shadows under my eyes, gave me eye makeup and eyelashes, even made my hair look less faded. So yeah, don’t compare yourself to anyone else, because you are seeing their best and comparing it with your every day, or even your worst. Just be you. Be kind to you. And watch yourself grow.

Another bit of advice that I’ve been trying to internalize – growth is not linear. There will be setbacks, there will be bad days, there will be days when you make no or even negative progress. But if you keep working at it, you will get there!

Where is Discovery!?

I hope your day is going better than mine… I know I usually only post blogs ponce a month now, but something came up that felt like it needed to be shared ASAP. And that ‘something’ is that Amazon is a bunch of assholes. We already knew this, of course, but right now it’s affecting me and my fans.

Basically, I was planning to send out an email on Wednesday about the rewrite of Discovery being released, but Amazon is giving me shit about it. It was already approved for pre-release, set to auto-release on Wednesday Mar 1. But I noticed a typo and I wanted to add the word ‘gay’ to the subtitle (just so anyone not interested in MM Romance doesn’t read it and become disappointed). But upon doing that, Amazon told me that the content suddenly ‘didn’t meet their guidelines.’

So, unless Amazon is suddenly openly anti-LGBTQ+ (which wouldn’t surprise me) then it was flagged in error. I’ve emailed them several times asking what was supposedly against their guidelines, and every time I’ve gotten a copy/pasted reply of “we reserve the rights to flag anything we want” along with a link to those guidelines. When I pointed out (after the third email) that all I had changed was adding the word gay, they were suddenly happy to forward it to a different team. Fingers crossed that they’ll approve it! But no promises, and it probably won’t be available by the first.

So what happens if they don’t approve it? Well, that’s what I’ve been thinking about. I wanted the story to be available for folks to read on Kindle Unlimited since I know that’s simple, cheap, and convenient for most of you. However, if Amazon doesn’t approve the book, then I can’t do that. So I think what I may do instead is made this one a ‘freebie’ for mailing list subscribers only. That means that I’d send it to all of my subscribers and to anyone who joins the list as well. And even if they do approve it, I’m planning to write a short story to share with all my subscribers anyway because I love and appreciate the support you’ve all been showing me!

With all that out of the way, I guess I’ll go ahead and share the rest of the information I was planning to post when Discovery was actually released. I’ll probably send out another email and make an update to this blog next Wednesday just to keep you posted on what Amazon says. Discovery’s New Cover

The whole beta reading and editing process went by so quick that I never had a chance to share Discovery’s new cover art. I’m super proud of it, but I’d love to know what you think. I feel like it more properly represents the book as a dark romance as well as being just better quality in general. It’s still made by me, though, so I feel pretty good about that. What do you think?

Hectic Holidays

I know holidays are a big thing for a lot of people, but they’re really not for me. I mostly spend it with my chosen polyamorous family, and one of the couples had a baby a couple years ago so we were planning to just get the little peanut her gifts and hang out and do a Yule dinner celebration.

Until the dad’s shoulder exploded on Xmas eve.

We’re not sure why, but he went to the emergency room, got some x-rays, and apparently there’s a ligament that just…isn’t attached anymore? It’s very painful for him, and they’re not sure if it will be fixable with physical therapy or if it will require surgery, but either way that was a big nasty surprise!

We’re planning to reschedule poly family Yule for early January (when my nesting partner’s birthday is) and roll all the winter stuff together, so fingers crossed that no on else explodes!

NaNoWriMo

…is still kicking my ass. For those of you who don’t know, this is my first year trying National Novel Writing Month. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s basically where people challenge themselves during the month of November to write 50K-100K words in a month. You set your personal goal at the beginning (I chose 50K) and are supposed to write & update your profile with what you’ve done each day.

Last week I gave you a small update on my numbers. Well, in good news, I’ve gone from 8K last week to 20K this week! Unfortunately, that’s still not on track. In order to be finished on time, I’ll have to write about 4K words per day until the end of November. Not impossible by any means, but I’m still not sure I’ll make it. But I’m not giving up, so wish me luck!

Depths of Desire

The new story I’m writing for NaNoWriMo is called Depths of Desire. In case you missed the update, it’s about an actor named Percival Warrens, Percy for short, who is filming a movie about mermaids. He is, in fact, the star of the film, and gets to wear a gorgeous custom mermaid tail and everything.

But while they’re out at sea filming, a storm throws him overboard and sinks the ship. But he’s the protagonist, so he can’t die, right? However, his rescuer is none other than a real merman, who tries to take Percy as his mate!

I’d say that 20K is probably about 1/3 of the book written, but this is probably the most excitement I’ve seen for a book of mine before it’s been released, let alone before finishing reading it! I wish I could put a firm release date on it, but the NaNo writing will just be a portion of the first draft. This book will be my longest yet, and I’m pretty sure it might hit 60K or even 80K words! I can’t wait to share even more soon!

(PS – the painting isn’t the cover, it’s just a really cool paint-by-number that I did and thought it fit haha. And if you know anyone who does affordable book covers, please let me know by replying to this email!)

Cover Update for Tainted Belief

Ta-da~! This is the new and extremely improved cover for my first novel, Tainted Belief! Mailing list subscribers got to see it well before anyone else. I sent it to them even before I uploaded it to Amazon, and they take an average of 3 days to implement any updates I send, haha oops! I’ve never used this cover artist before, and I don’t think they’d be a good fit for Depths of Desire, but I’m definitely more pleased with this cover than with the original I made! Let me know what you think!
